Boxfish Get Listed on Fox News’ 30 Best Apps for the iPad

We are the Fair and Balanced TV App

8.10.2012—We were greeted with a surprise after lunch by a text from one of our friends saying that Fox News listed Boxfish on their list of the 30 best apps for the iPad.

I hope our addition to the list is from Bill O’Reilly, Geraldo Rivera and Dennis Miller huddled around a tablet debating the merits of Boxfish, as that would be equal parts awesome and hilarious. Even if that isn’t true, why let the truth get in the way of a good story?

Apple Looks to Embrace Live TV

The Tech Giant’s Forey Into Cable Highlights Importance of Live TV

8.16.2012—It was reported by the Wall Street Journal today that Apple is making its way into the pay-TV world, seeking out a deal with cable service providers to expand content options on the next iteration of Apple TV. Techcrunch’s MG Siegler had a great take on it here.

Moving away from the stream-only model displays one important aspect that, initially, those that wanted to “disrupt” TV content  with their set-top boxes didn’t consider…live TV matters.

While the argument for live breaking news or sports is there, the same can be argued for shows as well. Sure, streaming services are great, how else do you get to power through season after season of a TV show, commercial free at the press of a button? But you are watching that show after the fact.

In keeping up with the show, especially a show you like, there is no service that lets you watch it when it first airs…except for TV. Keeping viewers completely current with mainstream visual media is an integral part of getting into the TV space.

Apple gets it and in doing so is making the move to working with cable and content providers. The same motivation can be said about the creation of Google Fiber. As Siegler put it, “that’s where the content is.”

3 DAYS UNTIL WE LAUNCH!

Boxfish is Officially Unveiled on Tablets and Web Aug. 14

8.11.2012—After months fine-tuning, user tests, building up a monument of code just to take it down and add/improve a feature, breaking, fixing, breaking fixing—and not to go into details about the meetings around all of this—Boxfish is just days away from launch!

It’s been quite a journey up to this point (and one that will have us working through the weekend). The real test begins after launch, with the gauntlet of public attention and user opinion. However, we didn’t spend all this time just boasting about ourselves without any progress on our product. We’ve been dedicated to providing our users with the best experience in TV discovery.

Our app will be available for the iPad at the App Store, which will allow you to do some pretty awesome things with your TV. Rest easy, though, we will be everywhere before you know it. IPhone and Android versions are soon to follow.

“The End of Channel Surfing?” Yes!

Live TV and the Evolution of Social TV Services

8.7.2012—The end of channel surfing IS coming. It is what we at Boxfish have been saying for a while now. However, it is good to see the sentiment making headlines, as the future of TV content is being realized. Shayndi Raice’s piece for the Wall Street Journal, titled “The End of Channel Surfing?” is a good rundown of how those in the social TV space have evolved their respective products in such a short time.

While the social TV space has been seen as promising ground for business/product development for a few years now, it has only been in 2012 that its true potential is being recognized. Apps that were once touting “check-ins” and social connectivity based on “what your friends are watching” are starting to see that you need to offer more engagement with the content on TV, not just with users.

It’s not just tooting our own horn in stating that Boxfish has steadily been one of the few services that provide a two-way street with TV, bringing users from the web to television. Improving the process of connecting the user to the content on TV that he or she cares about should be the goal of all of us operating in the social TV space. Otherwise, what are we doing this for? Curating tweets about shows? I think we are all in this for the same reason, to revolutionize TV. We are all here and all have the same idea, now it is just the time to see who will actually do it.

CBS: Set-Top-Box Content Aired “On Our Terms”

Set Top Box Solutions Need to Find Middle Ground With Live TV

8.6.2012—CBS held an earnings call last week, where many topics were mentioned, not least of which was the network’s relationship with digital TV. AllThingsD published a story by Peter Kafka about CBS’s big boss, Les Moonves, apprehension, and admiration, for digital TV solutions. Specifically speaking about Apple TV, it is open to work with Apple and other services in supplying content, Moonves and CBS wants to do so “on our terms.”

While the digital solutions to TV have been the buzz of what’s coming for TV, live TV is still holding strong to its content and how it will be used. It might be soon we start seeing these two entities in the TV space find more middle ground that playing tug-of-war with the mantle for ushering in television’s new age.
